A University of Benin student drowned in River Benue on the closing day of Nigeria University Games Association in Makurdi, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
Chairman, NUGA Medical and Sanitation Sub-committee Omeche Onoja confirmed the incident. The name of the student was not disclosed.
Onoja said the student had gone to the river to swim when the incident occurred.
She said his corpse had been deposited at Madonna Hospital in Makurdi.
Onoja said, “We had a distress call from some students of the situation but on reaching the river, we found the lifeless body of the student, who has been identified by his colleagues. He was said to have participated in some games. Our correspondent learnt that the student went to swim in the river in company with his twin brother when the sad incident happened.
Meanwhile, the University of Port Harcourt garnered 70 gold, 47 silver and 33 bronze to win the 25th NUGA on Saturday.
The Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, hosted the weeklong competition, which featured 57 universities.
UNIPORT dominated judo, athletics, taekwondo, volleyball, basketball, scrabble and tennis.
Ahmadu Bello University Zaria came second with 11 gold, two silver and 3 bronze while Benson Idahosa University placed third with 10 gold, seven silver and nine bronze.
