I have been having this dilemma in weeks now whether to come up with a write up about this disturbing subject or rather just chill *with a bottle off beer* but the issue is really agitating so I have no better choice than to write.
Okay a lot of aspiring music stars expecially the guys of this century believe music wouldn’t smile at you if you happen not to be a drop out, what a silly conviction.*shoro niyen in olamide’s voice*
Before I begin to pen down those important facts, here is a rundown of 3 nigerian learned musicians doing or have done wonders in the music industry home and abroad.
Olubankole Wellington, aka Banky W, is one of the most popular music artistes in Nigeria today. He was born and educated in the USA.he has been able to make himself big in the industry and also birthed one of the greatest musical product of this country Wizkid.so what are we talking about here.
2. TIWA SALVAGE
Tiwa Savage is currently signed on to Mavin Records. She attended Berklee College of Music where she studied Jazz
and took a degree in music business. Also, she has a degree in business administration from the University of Kent in the United Kingdom.she has written songs for mary j blige, sting, george michael, kelly clarkson and the spice girls.she co wrote Fantasia
Barrino’s ‘Collard Greens and Cornbread’, which was nominated for the American Grammy Award.now tell me which of the unread did that.
Naetochukwu Chikwe is the son of the Nigerian Ambassador to Ireland, Mrs. Kema Chikwe. He graduated in 2004 from the George Washington University with a Master’s degree in Biology and still nurses the desire to become a medical doctor. In 2008 and 2009, he was named Best New Artist at the MTV Africa Music Awards.
Which of the learned and unlearned nigerian rapper has a master degree aside from naeto c.what a record!.
I earlied said just 3 names but the list is just too long, pardon me to add this other name
4. P SQUARE
Apart from music, Peter and Paul Okoye, the twins known as the P-Square, had a burning desire to be educated. They had
always made it clear to close friends and associates that they wanted to go back to school. So in 1999, they applied to
the University of Abuja to study business administration.Fame and money could not dissuade them from this goal.Just as they continued to hone their skills and to improve on their performances, they were focused on their educational needs. The group is easily one of the most successful in the country,
having won several awards and a huge fan base across Africa. They are listed among the 10 richest musicians in the continent.Anybody disputing that, uhm uhm uhm No?okay Better.
Now back to the facts, like I earlied said there appears to be an increase in
the number of youths dropping out of school to take up a career in music. While some of them have always said their passion for music was the reason why they quit the
classroom for the recording studio, others put the blame on poverty and other challenges. But the truth be told a courageous few have managed to resist the temptation to push aside their education and embrace the glamorous life style of music artistes. With some now armed with
Master’s degrees in various disciplines, they have emerged as successful and highly respected artistes with a wide fan base across the country.
Here are few reasons why you need that knowledge besides the *palasa*
1.MUSIC DEMAND KNOWLEDGE
Music in time memorial has succeded in directing people positively in every area of life, that has been made possible by well and clearly expressed songs.for one to be able to garner that art you should agree with me that formal education is eminently essential.Music needs the understanding of literature couple with comprehension of english to come up with an art to express one’s self excellently.
You might want to write a well composed, grammatically clear with lyrics well researched and smartly picked to convey the ultimate melody and emotion kinda of song like M.I, P.O.E, Waje, Vector, Timi Dakolo……yes, you need formal education.it is possible that artiste who were not privileged to get a formal education still come up with good songs, but how many of those same artistes actually wrote those songs all by themselves?
2. THE MUSIC BUSINESS ITSELF
A lot of us who has formal education and still struggle with mathematics will just wonder about those who dropped out.*maths nor be talent o*while English and Literature are working hand in hand to dish out the astonishing lyrics, mathematics is pushing its ugly head out for you to use cause you need it.
A carrer in music means recording, negotiating deals, royalties, percentage shares (I believe equations are there now also lol) which are not in words but figures.now I believe you see why you need maths.
Those that aint deeply or even merely rooted in mathematics will find this confusing and I bet you that’s actually what this Nigeria record label wants.
Am not asking you go get a degree in maths, just understanding the core concepts is enough to help you calculate your returns.
Mathematics also plays a big role in calculating rhythm, tempos, and patterns of great melodies, the record producers should be able to relate to this.
3. THE SOCIAL SCENE
There is this awkward feeling when your are in the means of those of a higher class than you.that feeling gets suicidal when an unread is in the gathering of learned fellows. An educated person knows how to play the *celebrity game* when in a social gathering, prompting minds to come up with a great business idea and strategy which in turn makes him or her a bigger brand.
Asides that count,a literate knows how to answer *annoying questions from annoying interviewers so to speak* so as not to offend anyone which is very common among nigerian artiste *the beef thing*.No one want to pull that foolish act of Birdman and Omawumi walking out of live interviews.
Matter don dey long, let me stop here
In short, this article is not aimed at offending anyone but educating the importance of formal education in the music business. My wish is for up coming artiste to tow the path of these ones that completed their education before moving to
stardom. You cannot do without education as it will always give you edge and leverage over the non educated ones.
But wait o everything I just dey speak here na grammer if you apparently don’t agree with me..the question is AAUXCLUSIVITE do you agree with me or your thought differs
